Rationale
The purpose of middle school physical education is to develop the fundamentals, knowledge, and basic skills needed to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle. It is our ultimate goal to produce students who will value the importance of physical activity and it’s role in everyday life. The physical education program provides opportunities for all students to experience, understand, and value the importance of physical activity within a positive learning environment. The physical education classroom also provides a unique learning environment where psychomotor, cognitive, and affective skills will be developed through a variety of team, individual, rhythmic, and fitness opportunities. The physical education classroom will optimize the students well-being by fostering cooperation, teamwork, and sportsmanship that will encourage self-confidence and self-expression.
The physical education curriculum based many of it's ideas through two learning theories. The multiple intelligences theory and social development theory help create a curriculum that meets the needs of every student. The multiple intelligence theory helps the physical education curriculum implement instructional strategies that meet the needs of a variety of different types of learners. The social development theory was used to develop social skills through a variety of cooperative activities. The theory helps establish an expectation of teamwork, cooperation, self-descipline, fair play, and self-confidence. These characteristics play a critical role in developing a student of high moral character and positive role models in society.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide a teaching, learning, and caring environment where all children benefit from a commitment to excellence. The physical education curriculum endorses the fact that physical education is an integral part of education, which contributes to the development of the individual through physical movement. Our program enhances growth and development, teaches students the effects of their bodies, and provides physical skills for present and lifelong activity.
Philosophy
Physical education in the School District recognizes daily, middle school physical education as an integral part of every student’s educational program. Growth in social, emotional, cognitive, and motor skills is fostered through physical activity. The program emphasizes good sportsmanship and encourages fair play, along with the development of physical skills. Cooperation and respect for each other helps provide a safe environment, both physically and emotionally. It should be noted that healthful, active life-styles are taught and learned just as any other attitude or skill. Physical education programs must start at the earliest possible level and progress sequentially, teaching concepts and skills that are developmentally appropriate.
Goals
Goals address what students should know and be to do after experiencing a quality physical education curriculum. Illinois’ Common Core State Standards will provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so that teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The Common Core State Standards are designed to be relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in both college and work.
